About Us

The Lehmann Design Group is a small Triangle based landscape architectural and project management firm owned by Michael R. Lehmann. He is a registered landscape architect in the State of North Carolina (#1683). Mike is a graduate of Michigan State University (1975) with a bachelor of landscape architecture degree (BLA), and has been practicing his craft every since.

“With forty years of experience, you’d be hard pressed to find a Triangle area landscape architect with a superior combination of design and industry experience, good judgment and horticultural and product knowledge.”

Craft beers, artisanal bread, farmer’s markets, personal trainers, specialty stores of all kinds, that one of a kind local restaurant… many of us seek out the special, the personal touch when we can.

Your landscape needs are equally unique. I am Mike Lehmann, landscape architect and owner of the Lehmann Design Group. I have been producing artisanal, hand drawn custom residential landscape masterplans tailored to the unique and special needs of my clients for 40 years. I can do the same for you.

About Mike

I am part artist, part engineer, part ecologist and part horticultural expert. My background includes landscape contracting, project management and extensive gardening and horticultural experience. I own a world class plant collection including many rare, unusual and endangered plants from around the world and is developing a private botanical garden on five acres in Chatham County. I also own Asiatica Cattery, a small, home-based cattery.

As an independent designer, I work solely for your best interests: I am never trying to sell you anything. My job is to respond to your needs. First and foremost, that means “designing in” the most bang for the buck. The question I ask myself is this: “given your budget, your program, that is, what you say you want to accomplish in landscape improvements, what is the wisest, the most cost effective way we can spend those dollars?” This is what I do best. This is extremely important, and why hiring experience and good judgment is so crucial. Hiring the right designer is the first and most important decision you’ll make in doing landscape work.

In addition to custom landscape architectural design services, I specialize in project management services, sustainable, low maintenance landscapes and in wise water management. That means: 1. I can, if you wish, take your landscape project from preliminary or conceptual design stage all the way through to supervising the installation of the last daffodil, or anything in between. That means: 2. designing a landscape with minimal upkeep– labor, materials, and dollars. That means: 3. Utilizing water as a precious resource–minimizing its use where possible, keeping it from damaging your home and maximizing its value and utility in the landscape.
