It’s Too Hot in the Summer

It’s too hot…it’s too cold…

It’s too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter to even think about landscape……”

This is the conventional wisdom around here, but the truth is it’s always time to plan for your next landscape project.

If you are contemplating a good sized landscape project or backyard redo, this will inevitably involve planning and design, and this will require some advance planning and some thinking ahead on your part.  The more time you give yourself, the better off you’ll be.  Think “spring” or “summer” for planning a fall or winter installation.  Think “fall” or “winter” for a spring or summer project.

Planning and design comes first.

This initial work is not weather dependent!!
In a hurry to get your project off the ground?  Think “off season”.  December, January, July and August are often the best times of the year to start a landscape project, or to schedule an appointment. Landscapers, and designers like me, are often less busy during these months, and a less hectic schedule can mean better, less rushed service for you.

A note about winter:  yes it’s cold, but this is the very best time of year to plant woody trees and shrubs, for two reasons.  This is the time of year plants grow roots.  Soils, especially in the late fall and early winter, are still warm and conducive to rapid root growth, great for getting these woody plants established quickly and easily.

Woody plants, including conifers and other evergreens are also going dormant mid to late fall and stay dormant through early spring, another reason they can be planted and transplanted with ease at this time of year (even in mid to late winter, the ground rarely freezes in this area).  Perennials, like hosta’s, daylilies and iris are best planted in the spring or early fall.

Winter?  Summer?

Forget the conventional wisdom and give me a call.  It is never too early to start planning your next landscape project.
